Save Kingston Environment Centre
We the undersigned petition the council to allow the Kingston Environment Centre to remain in its premises at 1 Kingston Road, New Malden, with a renewed lease at reasonable terms for a community-based organisation.
Since 2007, Kingston Environment Centre, with the support of a
five-year lease from RBK, has become a base for eco-events and
activities around the borough. It is a hub for the local community,
hosting numerous activities at its premises. It provides valuable
volunteering and educational opportunities to vulnerable and local
people. It hosts events for Korean and diaspora communities, is
home to the Kingston Green Radio media service and the Kingston
Biodiversity officer, and is a meeting place for volunteer groups
such as the Stitch and Chat, Kingston Cycle Campaign and litter
picking groups to name but a few. Every week hundreds of people
come through the doors of the centre to take part in our myriad of
campaigns and community activities.
The centre is run by volunteers and to date has received funding from RBK. The lease for the centre runs out on April 18th 2018 and it is unclear whether this will be continued. If the lease is not extended, and RBK no longer supports the centre, it will result in a huge loss for Kingston. At a time when the environment and support for local community groups feature prominently in the council’s plans, we want to ensure that the Environment Centre can continue to provide an information and educational service to the borough.
Please help us save our wonderful community resource! It will be impossible to keep going if high rentals are levied against us or if we don’t have premises any more. With a minimum of 500 signatures we will be able to put our case directly to councillors at a full council meeting.
